The significant effort to bring the first season of The Last of Us to the small screen has proven to be a major success for Alberta.

Data released by Oxford Economics on November 27th reveals that $141 million was spent in Alberta during the filming of the post-apocalyptic series based on the video game of the same name.

The report indicates that about half of that amount was used to pay salaries for the cast, film crew, and local production staff, while the remaining portion was spent on local businesses.

From lumber to construction materials, hotels, and local dining services, this operation supported over 1,000 businesses in Alberta across various communities.

With the spending amount in Alberta, The Last of Us has become the “largest film production ever shot in Canada.”

Federal Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge stated, “ The Last of Us is a reminder that Canada is not only a great place to film but also the best place to find all the talent needed to produce world-class content.”

The Last of Us was filmed at over 180 locations in Alberta, generating over $182 million for Alberta’s GDP and creating 1,490 jobs.

The series has been renewed for a second season and has received 24 Emmy nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series.

In addition to the Emmy nominations, the series has also won special awards for its filming locations.

The second part of The Last of Us is currently being filmed in Vancouver and is expected to be released in 2025.
